Dhannya-Safibhadra (Short Story)

Summary

1. The Story Begins : A trader brings jem-blankets to King Srenika, who finds them lightweight but useful, as they keep one cool in summer and warm in winter. The queen desires them, but the price is too high for the royal treasury, so the king cannot purchase them. 2. Salibhadra’s Purchase : The trader, disappointed, goes to the merchant Salibhadra’s house. Salibhadra’s mother, Bhadra, buys all the blankets, despite their high cost, and divides them among her thirty-two daughters-in-law. When the king later requests a blanket, Bhadra pretends that the blankets have been discarded in a dead-well. 3. Salibhadra’s Wealth and Isolation : The king is amazed at Salibhadra’s wealth and visits his palace, which is lavishly built with golden floors and jewels. Salibhadra, however, remains unaware of the king’s authority, thinking that there is no lord over him until his mother informs him of the king’s power. 4. Salibhadra’s Renunciation: Despite his wealth, Salibhadra feels discontent, realizing that there is a lord over him, which disturbs his peace. After speaking with his mother, he decides to renounce everything and seek spiritual liberation. His sister Subhadra tries to persuade him, but he is determined. Meanwhile, Dhannya, another character, humorously renounces the world in an instant, challenging the idea that renunciation is a slow process. 5. Dhannya’s Sudden Renunciation : Dhannya renounces everything immediately, including his wealth and relationships, without hesitation. His example inspires Salibhadra, who also renounces the world at that very moment, following Dhannya’s path of sudden detachment.
